Quick answer

New Year's Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, and 1 January 2027 is a public holiday. No municipality had announced its 2026 programme when we checked on 19 October 2026. In 2025 the biggest free street parties were in Limassol, at Grigori Afxentiou Square (with no fireworks), and in Larnaca, on the Finikoudes seafront (with fireworks at midnight). Nicosia has not held a public midnight countdown since the pandemic, so most people there celebrate at hotel galas, restaurants and bars, as they do in Paphos and Ayia Napa. Book early, plan a taxi home and expect police alcohol checks.

  • No Cyprus municipality had published a New Year's Eve 2026 programme when we checked on 19 October 2026.
  • In 2025 Limassol held a free concert at Grigori Afxentiou Square from 21:30 to 01:00 and dropped fireworks out of consideration for pets.
  • In 2025 Larnaca held a free show on the Finikoudes seafront from 23:00 to 01:00, with fireworks at midnight.
  • Nicosia's public New Year's Eve event has been suspended since the pandemic; on 24 December 2025 the mayor said a return would be considered for 2026.
  • Police ran stepped-up festive checks from 22 December 2025 to 6 January 2026, and the general drink-drive limit is 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath.
  • 1 January is a public holiday: in 2024 shops and supermarkets closed that day and shut at 18:00 on New Year's Eve.

We're waiting for the 2026 New Year's Eve parties and fireworks. Leave your email and we'll send you this guide once, as soon as it's updated. Nothing else.

New Year's Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, and Friday 1 January 2027 is a public holiday, so most people get a long weekend. In 2025 the biggest free street parties were in Limassol and Larnaca. In Nicosia, Paphos and Ayia Napa, New Year's Eve mostly happens at hotel galas, restaurants and bars. This guide goes city by city, then covers getting home safely, what closes on 1 January and how to plan around pets and the weather.

Checked 19 October 2026: none of the municipalities had announced a New Year's Eve 2026 programme. Everything marked "In 2025" below describes last year and is a guide to what to expect, not a confirmed plan. Programmes usually appear in December, often only in the last days before 31 December.

What happens on New Year's Eve in Cyprus?

For many Cypriot families the evening starts at home or in a taverna, with dinner and card games. At midnight they cut the vasilopita, the New Year cake with a coin hidden inside, and whoever finds the coin is said to have luck all year. Our guide to vasilopita and New Year traditions explains the custom. Nightlife picks up after midnight, and the big hotels hold gala dinners that run until about 02:30. Christmas events end around Epiphany on 6 January; our Christmas in Cyprus guide covers the markets, lights and Christmas villages.

Limassol: open-air concert at Grigori Afxentiou Square

2026: not announced yet (checked 19 October 2026). Watch the Limassol Municipality website.

In 2025 the municipality turned Anexartisias Street into a pedestrian zone. It held a free programme at Grigori Afxentiou Square, the same square where the municipal Christmas tree was lit on 29 November. An "On Broadway" show began at 21:30, followed from 23:00 to 01:00 by a concert of Cypriot singers with an eight-piece band and the countdown at midnight. There were no fireworks: the mayor said the decision was made out of consideration for pets and people who are sensitive to noise. The year before, Limassol had tried low-noise "silent" fireworks for the first time.

If you would rather book a table, several Limassol hotels held New Year's Eve 2025 events:

Venue Area What it offered in 2025
City of Dreams Mediterranean Limassol Gala dinner in the Grand Ballroom from 20:00, live band, DJs and midnight fireworks; adults (18+) only
Parklane, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa Limassol Show and live food stations in the Diamond Ballroom, plus a separate kids' buffet
Four Seasons Hotel Agios Tychonas Dinner at Sera or Seasons Oriental, or a ballroom show
Royal Apollonia Limassol New Year's Eve gala dinner after a cocktail reception
Mediterranean Beach Hotel Limassol Three-night package with a gala dinner on 31 December
Columbia Beach Resort Pissouri Gala dinner with open bar and live music

These are 2025 programmes. Prices and line-ups for 2026 are not out yet, so check with each hotel. More ideas for the district are on our Limassol hub.

Larnaca: countdown and fireworks on Finikoudes

2026: not announced yet (checked 19 October 2026).

In 2025 Larnaca Municipality held two free events. An acoustic afternoon concert ran from 15:30 to 18:00 at Ermou Square in the old commercial centre. Then, from 23:00 to 01:00, a show hosted by producer Marios Loizou took place on the Finikoudes seafront, with fireworks at midnight. For New Year 2025 the municipality had switched to low-noise fireworks after residents asked it to protect animals; reports on the 2025–26 display did not say which kind was used.

The palm-lined promenade fills up well before midnight, so arrive early if you want to be near the stage. For live music indoors, Savino Live hosted the pop-rock band FUSE on New Year's Eve 2025 (€20 entry, doors at 22:00). See our Larnaca hub for the town and the Finikoudes area.

Nicosia: hotels, jazz and bars rather than a street party

2026: not announced yet (checked 19 October 2026).

Nicosia's municipal New Year's Eve event was suspended during the pandemic and had not come back by 2025. On 24 December 2025 the mayor said the city wanted to revive it, and that the municipal cultural committee would look at it for 2026. Keep an eye on the Nicosia Municipality website in December. In 2025 the city's festive programme at Eleftheria Square and Makariou Avenue ran on weekends until Epiphany, but it did not include a midnight countdown.

Places that held New Year's Eve events in 2025 included:

Venue What it offered in 2025
Hilton Nicosia Gala buffet in the Ledra Ballroom from 21:00 with live music and a DJ; €130 per adult and €70 per child under 12 in 2025
Amyth of Nicosia Six-course gala dinner with a midnight toast
Sarah's Jazz & Blues Club (Faneromenis Street, old town) Live jazz from 21:00 with a buffet (€90) or a music-only ticket (€60)
Palaia Pineza Bar An early "goodbye 2025" party with DJs in the afternoon, ending before dinner

Our Nicosia hub has more on the old town's bar streets.

Paphos: hotel galas and a quieter town

2026: not announced yet (checked 19 October 2026).

The Pafos Municipality lit its Christmas tree at Kennedy Square on 28 November 2025 and published its December 2025 programme on 5 December. We could not find a dated report of a public midnight countdown in Paphos for New Year's Eve 2025, so do not count on one. Check the municipality's December programme when it comes out.

Hotels are where most of Paphos celebrated in 2025:

Venue Area What it offered in 2025
Annabelle Paphos Gala dinner 19:30–22:30, bar with live music until 02:30, fireworks at midnight
Aphrodite Hills Resort Kouklia Festive dinners with live music and a New Year's Day champagne breakfast
Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort Peyia Two-night package with a New Year's dinner and New Year's Day breakfast

More on the area is on our Paphos hub.

Ayia Napa and Protaras: resort hotels

2026: not announced yet (checked 19 October 2026).

The Famagusta district resorts are quieter in winter than in summer. We found no dated report of a municipal New Year's Eve event in Ayia Napa or Paralimni for 2025. The Ayia Napa Marina Christmas Village closed on 28 December in 2025, so it did not run on New Year's Eve. Deryneia's Christmas village ran until 6 January. Adams Beach Hotel held New Year's Eve 2025 dinners in its Glasshouse Lounge and Socrates Ballroom, with set menus and live music. Check the Agia Napa Municipality events page in December, and see our Famagusta district hub.

Troodos: New Year in the mountains

For a crisp, quiet New Year, a night in a Troodos village is a popular alternative. Mountain Christmas villages such as Kakopetria, Kalopanagiotis and Kyperounta stay decorated until Epiphany, and the Christmas in Cyprus guide lists them. We could not confirm any Troodos hotel's New Year's Eve 2025 programme, so ask your hotel directly what is on before you book. Be ready for winter conditions. For New Year's Eve 2025, forecasters expected sleet or snow in the mountains and night temperatures close to 0°C at altitude. Check the forecast and road conditions before driving up, and read our Troodos skiing guide if there is snow.

How do you get home safely on New Year's Eve?

  • Buses: we found no reports of free or extended public bus services for New Year's Eve 2025, so don't rely on a late bus. Our public transport guide lists the operators.
  • Taxis: demand peaks just after midnight and again after 02:00, when hotel parties end. Book a return taxi in advance or use an app; our apps guide lists the main ones.
  • Police checks: for the 2025–26 holidays, Cyprus Police ran stepped-up traffic checks from 22 December to 6 January. They targeted drink- and drug-driving, speeding and phone use on city roads and motorways. On a single Saturday night (20 December 2025), 49 of the 470 drivers breathalysed were over the limit.
  • The limit: 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath for most drivers, and 9 micrograms for new and professional drivers. Fines and penalty points rise with the reading, and the highest readings go to court. In practice, if you plan to drink, don't drive.

What is closed on 1 January?

New Year's Day is a public holiday, so banks, government offices and schools are closed. Public schools are off from 24 December 2026 to 6 January 2027. In 2024, shops and supermarkets closed at 18:00 on New Year's Eve and stayed shut on 1 January. Most malls also closed their shops that day, though some kept their restaurants and cafés open. Do your food shopping by the afternoon of the 31st, and book any New Year's Day lunch in advance. For more on public holidays, see our holidays and working hours guide.

Fireworks and pets: what to expect

Public displays have become quieter. Limassol used low-noise fireworks for New Year 2025 and none at all for 2026, while Larnaca switched to low-noise fireworks in 2024 at residents' request. Private bangers still go off in neighbourhoods. In February 2026 parliament passed a stricter fireworks law, with fines ten times higher for unauthorised use of explosives. Organisers and venue owners can also now be held responsible. For dogs and cats, keep them indoors from the evening, close the shutters, leave a radio on and make sure their microchip details are up to date. Our pet care guide has more.

When should you book, and what is the weather like?

  • Book by early December. Hotel galas and restaurant set menus in Limassol and Nicosia sell out, and family-friendly galas fill first. Ask whether the price includes drinks and children's meals, and whether there is a dress code; galas are usually smart or formal.
  • Flying out or hosting visitors? Flights on 31 December are often among the cheapest of the season. Our Christmas and New Year flights guide covers dates and airports.
  • Dress for winter. On New Year's Eve 2025 forecasters expected highs of 15–16°C on the coast and about 6°C at night, with storms in places and a yellow warning being prepared. Outdoor concerts go ahead in light rain, so bring a waterproof jacket.

What to do next

  1. Decide between a free street party (Limassol or Larnaca in recent years) and a hotel or restaurant event.
  2. If you want a gala dinner, contact the venue in November and ask for its 2026 menu and price.
  3. Check your municipality's website in mid-December for the official programme and road closures.
  4. Book your taxi home or choose a designated driver, and stock up before the shops close on 31 December.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to celebrate New Year's Eve in Cyprus?

For a free outdoor party, Limassol and Larnaca have put on the biggest municipal events in recent years: Limassol at Grigori Afxentiou Square and Larnaca on the Finikoudes seafront. For a gala dinner, the large hotels in Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos and Ayia Napa all hold New Year's Eve events.

Are there fireworks in Cyprus on New Year's Eve?

It depends on the town and the year. Larnaca had fireworks at midnight in 2025. Limassol skipped them in 2025 to protect pets and people sensitive to noise, after using low-noise fireworks in 2024. Some hotels, such as Annabelle in Paphos, also held their own midnight displays.

Is there a New Year's Eve party in Nicosia?

There has been no municipal midnight countdown in Nicosia since the pandemic. In December 2025 the mayor said the city wanted to bring it back and would consider it for 2026, but nothing had been announced by 19 October 2026.

Are shops open on New Year's Day in Cyprus?

Mostly not. 1 January is a public holiday. In 2024 shops and supermarkets closed for the day, and most malls opened only their restaurants and cafés. On New Year's Eve shops usually close early, at around 18:00.

Are there free buses on New Year's Eve in Cyprus?

We found no reports of free or extended public bus services for New Year's Eve 2025. Plan to walk, book a taxi in advance or agree on a designated driver, because police step up alcohol checks over the festive season.

What is the weather like on New Year's Eve in Cyprus?

Cool and often wet. For New Year's Eve 2025 forecasters expected daytime highs of 15–16°C on the coast, about 6°C at night, storms in places and sleet or snow in the mountains. Bring a warm jacket for outdoor events.
