Quick answer

Child benefit (epidoma teknou) in Cyprus is an annual, income-tested payment for families who have lived legally and continuously in the Republic for at least five years. As of 2026 gross family income must be no more than €49,000 with one child, €59,000 with two, €64,000 with three and €69,000 with four, with no income limit for five or more children, and family assets must stay under €1.2 million. New applicants apply online with a verified CY Login account by 31 December 2026; families approved in 2025 are reassessed automatically, and payments go out once a year at the end of May.

  • Residence test: at least five years of legal and continuous residence in the Republic of Cyprus before you apply; time in another EU country can count.
  • Income limits for 2026: €49,000 (one child), €59,000 (two), €64,000 (three), €69,000 (four); no income test for five or more children; assets under €1.2 million.
  • A one-child family on a low income gets about €600 a year (2026); larger families get more per child. Single parents can add the single-parent family benefit of up to about €200 a month per child.
  • New 2026 applications close on 31 December 2026; apply online through CY Login and send a signed authorisation form. The 2026 payment started on 29 May 2026.
  • Separate support: the Social Insurance birth grant (€1,000 for a first child, rising to €2,500 from the fourth), maternity allowance and, from 2026, a tax deduction of €1,000 to €1,500 per child.

Yes, expat families can get child benefit in Cyprus, but only after five years of legal and continuous residence and within strict income limits: as of 2026, gross family income of up to €49,000 with one child or €59,000 with two, and no income limit for five or more children. New applications for 2026 close on 31 December 2026 and are made online through CY Login. Below we set out who qualifies, what you can expect to receive, the exact steps and the other family support worth claiming alongside it.

A note on searches: much of what comes up for "επίδομα παιδιού" or "A21" is about Greece, which has a different scheme, different limits and a different portal. Everything here is about the Republic of Cyprus.

Who qualifies for child benefit in Cyprus?

The benefit is run by the Welfare Benefits Management Service of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare (you may still see older references to the Grants and Benefits Service). To qualify, your family must meet all of these tests:

Test Rule as of 2026
Residence At least five years of legal and continuous residence in the government-controlled areas of Cyprus immediately before you apply
Dependent child Under 18; under 20 if still in secondary school; under 21 if serving in the National Guard; any age if permanently unable to support themselves
Family income (gross, per year) €49,000 for one child, €59,000 for two, €64,000 for three, €69,000 for four
Five or more children No income limit since 2025
Assets Total family assets of no more than €1.2 million, including assets transferred in the previous 24 months

How the five-year rule works for EU, UK and non-EU families

  • EU citizens: reporting in July 2026 confirms that legal residence in another EU member state counts towards the five years, and EU coordination rules (Regulation 883/2004) protect EU workers' families. Keep proof of your previous residence, such as registration certificates or tax records.
  • UK nationals: the Withdrawal Agreement protects equal treatment for UK nationals who were living in Cyprus before the end of 2020, so your years here count like an EU citizen's.
  • Other non-EU nationals: you need five years of legal residence in Cyprus, so gaps between permits or time on a visitor status can break the chain. Ask the service on 1450 how your permit history will be treated before you apply.

Income is gross family income from all sources, including foreign income and dividends. The test uses earlier-year income declared to the Tax Department, so make sure both parents have filed tax returns; our guide to filing a tax return in Cyprus explains how.

How much child benefit do you get?

The amount depends on two things: your family income band and how many dependent children you have. It is paid per child, and larger families receive much more per child. Amounts are indexed to inflation every year.

The most detailed published breakdown is for the 2024 benefit year, paid in May 2025 (annual amount for each child):

Family income (gross) 1 child 2 children 3 children 4 or more
Up to €19,500 €559 €718 €1,317 €2,112
€19,501–€39,000 €536 €655 €1,254 €1,922
€39,001–€49,000 €479 €479 €958 €1,588
€49,001–€59,000 Not eligible €435 €870 €1,430

For 2026, reports put a low-income one-child family at about €600 a year and a low-income two-child family at about €1,438 a year in total. The exact amount appears on your decision letter.

Single-parent family benefit

If you bring up your children alone, you can also claim the single-parent family benefit on top of child benefit. It has the same residence and asset tests, an income limit of €49,000, and pays up to about €200 a month per child (as reported in July 2026), with a lower rate in the upper income band. If you were already approved for child benefit in 2025, you request the single-parent benefit for 2026 through the online change of details form rather than a new application.

How do you apply for child benefit online?

Everything is done online through the gov.cy child benefit and single-parent family benefit service.

Step 1: Get a verified CY Login account

You need a CY Login account with a verified profile. You can verify through some Cyprus online banking services, at a Citizen Service Centre or at a district post office. Do this first, because it can take a few days.

Step 2: Gather your information

Have these ready before you start (the form tells you exactly what to upload in your case):

  1. Your ARC, MEU1 or other residence document numbers for each parent, and proof of your residence history if part of it was in another EU country.
  2. Your children's birth certificates. If your baby was born here, see how to register a birth in Cyprus.
  3. Tax identification numbers and income details for both parents, including income from abroad.
  4. A Cyprus bank account IBAN in the applicant's name.
  5. For single parents: proof of your status, such as a divorce decree or custody order.

Step 3: Submit the online application

Log in, complete the application and submit it by 31 December 2026 for the 2026 benefit year. Do not leave it to the last week: the authorisation form below also has to reach the service.

Step 4: Send the signed authorisation form

First-time applicants must also sign an authorisation form and hand in the original at a Welfare Benefits Service Point, by appointment. If you have an electronic signature, you can submit it online instead.

Step 5: Track the decision and payment

You can follow your application online. Questions go to the helpline 1450 or by email to grants@wbas.dmsw.gov.cy.

Do you need to reapply every year?

No. If you were approved for 2025, the service reassesses you automatically. You must report any change, such as a new baby, marriage, separation or a change in income including dividends, through the online change of details form; changes are not accepted by phone.

When is child benefit paid?

Child benefit is paid once a year as a lump sum into your bank account, not monthly. The 2026 payment began on 29 May 2026, and the 2025 payment went out on 30 May 2025. If you apply later in the year, you are paid after your application is approved.

Is child benefit changing in 2027?

In September 2026 the government announced a reform that would widen eligibility to about 17,000 more families and raise income limits to €69,000 (one child), €74,000 (two), €90,000 (three) and €100,000 (four). Instead of losing everything when income goes slightly over the limit, families would see the benefit taper down. Increases of 5–10% are proposed, mostly for lower- and middle-income families. The bill still needs approval by the House of Representatives and is planned for 2027, so the 2026 rules above still apply for now.

What other family support can you claim in Cyprus?

Child benefit is only one of several payments. These come from different services with their own rules:

Support Who runs it Key facts (2026) Apply
Birth grant Social Insurance Services One-off payment: €1,000 first child, €1,500 second, €2,000 third, €2,500 fourth and later (since October 2024); based on the mother's or father's social insurance gov.cy birth grant
Maternity allowance Social Insurance Services 22 weeks for insured mothers, longer for later children; usually 72% of insurable earnings gov.cy maternity allowance
Paternity allowance Social Insurance Services Two paid weeks for insured fathers Social Insurance Services
Support for new mothers under 30 Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare €200 payment for a first child born from 1 September 2025 to a mother under 30; EU citizens, refugees and long-term residents Linked to an approved birth grant
Student grant Ministry of Finance grants service Help with university costs for eligible students and families gov.cy student grant

Birth grant and maternity allowance depend on your social insurance record, not on five years' residence, so newly arrived working parents may qualify for these well before child benefit. If you are not yet registered, see how to get a social insurance number in Cyprus, and for the hospital side read our guide to giving birth in Cyprus.

Receiving child benefit also opens doors to other schemes: families on child benefit can apply for nursery and pre-school fee subsidies for young children, and households receiving it for three or more children can ask the Electricity Authority of Cyprus for its reduced vulnerable-customer tariff.

What are the 2026 child tax deductions?

Separately from benefits, the 2026 tax reform introduced a deduction for each dependent child of €1,000 for the first, €1,250 for the second and €1,500 for each further child. It applies only if gross family income is under €100,000 (up to two children), €150,000 (three or four) or €200,000 (five or more). Child benefit and student grants do not count towards that family income. You claim it on your 2026 tax return, filed in 2027; both parents must file and consent to sharing information. Our Cyprus tax reform 2026 explainer covers the details, and the Tax Department's 2026 reform guide is the official reference.

What if one parent works in another EU country?

EU rules stop families from being paid twice. When parents live or work in different EU countries, the country where a parent works pays first, ahead of a country where the family only lives. If both countries have a claim on the same basis, the country where the children live usually takes priority. If the other country pays less than Cyprus would, Cyprus can pay a differential supplement to make up the difference. Tell the Cyprus service about any family benefit received abroad, and see the European Commission's family benefits guidance for examples.

Common problems to avoid

  • Missing the 31 December deadline. It is the cut-off for the 2026 benefit year.
  • Forgetting the authorisation form. An online application without it can stall.
  • Unreported changes. A new baby or a pay rise must be reported online, or your entitlement may be recalculated later.
  • Unfiled tax returns. Income is checked against tax records, so a missing return can delay the decision.

What to do next

Frequently asked questions

How many years do you need to live in Cyprus to get child benefit?

You need at least five years of legal and continuous residence in the government-controlled areas before you apply. Reports in 2026 say residence in another EU member state counts towards the five years, which matters for EU families; non-EU families should check their own case with the Welfare Benefits Management Service on 1450.

How much is child benefit in Cyprus in 2026?

It depends on family income and the number of children. A one-child family with income under about €22,000 receives roughly €600 a year, and a two-child family on a similar income about €1,438 a year in total. Families with three or more children receive considerably more per child.

When is child benefit paid in Cyprus?

Once a year, as a lump sum. The 2026 benefit began to be paid on 29 May 2026, and the 2025 benefit was paid on 30 May 2025. New applications approved later in the year are paid after approval.

Do I need to reapply for child benefit every year in Cyprus?

No, if you were approved the previous year and nothing has changed. The service reassesses you automatically. If you married, had a baby, separated or your income changed, report it online through the change of details form.

Can expats get child benefit in Cyprus?

Yes, foreign residents can qualify if they meet the five-year legal residence rule and the income and asset limits. If one parent works in another EU country, EU coordination rules decide which country pays first, and Cyprus may top up the difference.

Is the child benefit income limit going up in 2027?

A reform announced in September 2026 would raise the limits, for example to €69,000 for one child and €74,000 for two, and phase the benefit out gradually instead of cutting it off. It still needs parliament's approval and is planned for 2027.
