Cookie Policy

Quick answer

Expatify uses only the storage needed to run the site and remember your choices. Optional cookies, such as analytics or affiliate tracking, are only used if you choose "Accept all" in the cookie banner. You can change your choice at any time through the "Cookie settings" link in the footer.

This policy explains how Expatify uses cookies and similar technologies on expatifyguide.com, and how you can control them. It should be read together with our Privacy Policy.

1. What cookies and local storage are

Cookies are small text files that a website saves in your browser. They let the site remember information between page views, such as a language you picked.

Local storage is a similar browser feature. It saves small pieces of information on your device. Unlike cookies, it is not sent to our server with every request.

In this policy, "cookies" covers both cookies and local storage, as the same EU rules apply to both.

2. Necessary and optional cookies

Necessary cookies are needed for the site to work or to provide something you have asked for, such as remembering your cookie choice or showing the site in another language. We do not need your consent for these.

Optional cookies are not needed to use the site. They include analytics (to understand how the site is used) and affiliate tracking. We only use them if you choose "Accept all" in the cookie banner. If you choose "Only necessary", they are not used.

At the moment, no optional cookies are active on Expatify. If we add any, we will list them in the table below before they are switched on, and they will only run after you have chosen "Accept all".

3. Cookies we use

Name Provider Purpose Type Duration
expatify-consent (local storage) Expatify Remembers whether you chose "Accept all" or "Only necessary", so the banner does not appear on every page Necessary 12 months
googtrans (cookie) Expatify / Google Translate Remembers the language you picked in the language menu. Only set when you choose a language other than English Necessary Until you close your browser, or until you switch back to English
Google Translate cookies Google Set by Google when the Google Translate service loads after you pick a non-English language. Used by Google to deliver the translation Necessary (third party) Set by Google; see Google's policy

Optional cookies (not active yet)

Name Provider Purpose Type Duration
Analytics cookies (for example _ga, _ga_* from Google Analytics 4) Google Count visits and see which pages are popular, so we can improve the guide Optional Up to 2 years if added
Affiliate tracking Affiliate networks and partners Record that a visit or booking came from Expatify, so we can earn a commission Optional Set by each partner if added

We will update this table if anything changes.

4. Google Translate

The site is written in English. If you choose another language in the language menu, we set the googtrans cookie and load the Google Translate service. Google may then set its own cookies and receive information such as your IP address and the page being translated. Google acts independently when it does this. See Google's Privacy Policy and how Google uses cookies.

If you do not use the language menu, Google Translate is not loaded and these cookies are not set.

5. Affiliate partners and other websites

Some links on Expatify are affiliate links. Our partners include Booking.com, Tripadvisor, Vrbo, GetYourGuide, Viator, Skyscanner, Discover Cars, Wise, Revolut, Payoneer, Airalo, NordVPN, Hostinger, Shopify, Babbel and Sirelo.

When you click one of these links, you leave Expatify. The partner may then set its own cookies on its own website, for example to record that you arrived from Expatify. Those cookies are controlled by the partner, not by us, and are covered by the partner's own cookie and privacy policies. Our cookie banner cannot control them, but you can manage them on the partner's site or in your browser.

Maps and videos are not embedded on Expatify by default. Where we refer to them, we link out to the provider's site, which applies its own cookie policy.

See our Affiliate Disclosure for more about how affiliate links work.

6. How to change your choice

You can change your cookie choice at any time. Click "Cookie settings" in the footer of any page. This reopens the cookie banner, where you can choose "Accept all" or "Only necessary" again.

If you withdraw consent, optional cookies will no longer be used from that point. You can also delete cookies that were already set using your browser settings (see below).

7. Browser controls

Most browsers let you see, block and delete cookies and local storage. Blocking all cookies may stop some features from working, such as remembering your language. Help pages for common browsers:

Clearing your browser's site data for expatifyguide.com also removes your saved cookie choice, so the banner will appear again on your next visit.

8. Changes to this policy

We will update this policy when we add, remove or change any cookies. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
