Quick answer
Most household moves to Cyprus travel by sea to Limassol, either in your own 20ft or 40ft container or in a shared (groupage) container. UK removal firms' 2026 price lists start at about £1,270–£1,430 for a one-bedroom groupage move and about £3,700–£4,400 for a three-bedroom house in a 20ft container, and sailings from the UK take about 17–20 days, or roughly six to eight weeks door to door. If you are moving from outside the EU, including the UK, your used belongings can come in free of duty and VAT under transfer-of-residence relief (Customs form Απ. 2); moves from another EU country need no customs clearance at all.
- Two main options: a sole-use 20ft or 40ft container, or a cheaper shared groupage container that takes longer because the mover waits to fill it.
- 2026 UK price lists: about £1,270–£1,430 for a one-bedroom groupage move, about £3,700–£4,400 for a 20ft container and about £4,350–£6,950 for a 40ft container.
- UK sailings to Limassol take about 17–20 days port to port; allow roughly six to eight weeks door to door, longer for groupage.
- Moving from the UK or another non-EU country: belongings owned and used for at least six months come in duty- and VAT-free if you lived outside the EU for 12 months and import them within six months before or 12 months after your move.
- Check that your mover belongs to the British Association of Removers (BAR) and FIDI, and buy transit insurance based on a full inventory.
Most people moving their home to Cyprus ship their belongings by sea to Limassol, either in their own container or in a shared one. In 2026 a one-bedroom move from the UK starts at about £1,300 and a three-bedroom house at about £3,700–£4,400, and the voyage itself takes under three weeks. If you are coming from the UK or anywhere else outside the EU, your used household goods can enter free of duty and VAT as long as you meet the transfer-of-residence conditions, so the paperwork matters as much as the packing.
What are your options for shipping a household to Cyprus?
Cyprus is an island, so everything that doesn't fit in a suitcase arrives by sea or air. The choice comes down to volume, budget and how soon you need your things.
| Option | Suits | How it works | Typical time from the UK |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20ft container (sole use) | Two- to three-bedroom homes | Loaded at your door, sealed and shipped direct to Limassol | About 17–20 days at sea; six to eight weeks door to door |
| 40ft container (sole use) | Four bedrooms or more, or furniture plus a car | As above, with twice the space (about 59 m³ against 30 m³) | As above |
| Groupage / shared container | Flats, part loads, a few pieces of furniture | Your goods go to a depot and share a container with other customers; you pay by volume | Often six to ten weeks, as the mover waits to fill the container |
| Air freight | Documents, laptops, clothes for the first weeks | Flown to Larnaca airport and cleared there | A few days to two weeks |
From continental Europe, movers usually combine road transport to a Mediterranean port with a short sea crossing; ask each firm which port it uses and how often it sails, because that sets your timing.
A common approach is to split the move: send essentials by air or in your luggage, and everything else by sea. Many people also bring less furniture than they expect to. Cypriot flats are often let furnished, and bulky dark wood furniture can feel heavy in the heat.
How much do removals to Cyprus cost in 2026?
Prices depend on volume, where you live in the UK, access at both ends and how much packing you want done. These figures are "from" prices published by two UK firms in 2026, so treat them as a starting point rather than a quote:
| Move | 1st Move International (2026) | PSS International Removals (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 boxes | About £380 | About £470 |
| One-bedroom home, shared container | About £1,270 (flat) – £1,450 (house) | About £1,427 |
| Three-bedroom house, 20ft container | About £3,700 | About £4,385 |
| Four-bedroom house, 40ft container | About £4,350 | About £6,945 |
A few extra costs are worth checking in each quote:
- Packing and materials. Shipit's 2026 guide puts packing for a small move at about £300–£400.
- Final delivery in Cyprus. The same guide lists last-mile delivery at about £390 for a full container and £225–£450 for smaller moves.
- Insurance. Usually 2–4% of the value you declare (2026).
- Air freight. About £400–£500 for 100 kg from Heathrow to Larnaca, according to Shipit's 2026 figures, so it only makes sense for small, urgent items.
- Port and clearance charges in Cyprus, storage if your new home isn't ready, and difficult access (narrow village streets, upper floors without a lift) can all add to the bill.
Get at least three written quotes after a video or home survey, and compare the same volume and the same door-to-door service.
How long does shipping take to Limassol?
Limassol is the island's main container port, and deliveries to Nicosia, Larnaca and Paphos usually go through it. Shipit's published sailings for October and November 2026 show 18–20 days from the UK to Limassol, and 1st Move quotes about 17–19 days port to port, with customs clearance usually taking two to five days. Once you add collection, waiting for the next sailing and delivery, plan on about six to eight weeks door to door for a full container. Groupage takes longer, because your goods wait at the depot until the container is full. Burke Bros, for example, quotes about 22 days on the ship but six to eight weeks for groupage, because of the time spent consolidating loads first.
Do you pay customs duty on your belongings?
Moving from the UK or another non-EU country
Since Brexit, a move from the UK is treated as an import from a "third country". The Cyprus Customs and Excise Department grants relief from import duty and VAT on personal property when you transfer your normal residence to Cyprus. Under its official guide:
- you must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months;
- the items must have been owned and used by you for at least six months before you left, and be for the same use in Cyprus;
- they must be imported within six months before or 12 months after you move (if they arrive first, Customs can ask for a guarantee);
- for 12 months after clearance you cannot sell, lend, hire out or give away the goods without Customs' approval, or the duty and VAT become payable.
Relief does not cover alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles or goods for trade, and anything new (owned for less than six months) can be taxed, with Cypriot VAT at 19%. You apply on form Απ. 2, available from any Customs office or the Customs website, with proof that you lived abroad (rental contract, employment records, children's school letters) and that you now live in Cyprus (rental or purchase contract, utility bills, employment). Movers' customs guides also say you normally need to be in Cyprus to sign the declaration, and that shipments from outside the EU can be physically inspected.
Moving from another EU country
Belongings moving between EU countries are in free circulation, so there is no duty, VAT or relief application on your furniture. For the sea leg your mover may still need a document proving the goods' EU status (often a T2L), which they normally arrange.
What about pets and cars?
Both follow their own procedures, separate from your household goods.
- Pets travel with a pet transport company or with you on a flight, not in the container. See our guide to bringing a dog or cat to Cyprus for the microchip, rabies vaccination and Veterinary Services notice.
- Cars can share a 40ft container with your furniture, but need their own Customs clearance and registration with the Road Transport Department. Read bringing a car to Cyprus from the UK, from the EU or our general guide to importing a car to Cyprus before you book.
Which removal firms move households to Cyprus?
These UK firms publish a current Cyprus service. We list them in alphabetical order and don't rank them; get quotes from several.
| Firm | Base | Memberships stated | Cyprus service |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st Move International | Bristol | BAR, IAM | Groupage and full containers to Limassol, air freight |
| Burke Bros | West Midlands and London | BAR, FIDI | Weekly service, groupage and full containers |
| PSS International Removals | Croydon | BAR Overseas, FIDI-FAIM, IAM | Groupage, full containers, air freight |
| Seven Seas Worldwide | UK | Not stated on the page | Sole-use MoveCube pods, door to door |
| White & Company | UK | BAR, FIDI | 20ft and 40ft containers, door to door |
Several removal and freight companies are also based in Limassol, Nicosia and Paphos and act as destination agents for UK movers or handle moves themselves. Ask your UK mover who their Cyprus agent is, and check that firm's memberships the same way.
How do you check a mover and protect your shipment?
- Memberships. The British Association of Removers (BAR) and its overseas group, and the FIDI Global Alliance with its FAIM quality standard, audit their members. BAR's Advance Payment Guarantee also protects your deposit if a member firm fails.
- Written quote. It should state the volume, door-to-door service, what is excluded (port charges, storage, access problems) and the insurance terms.
- Insurance. Buy transit cover based on a room-by-room inventory with realistic replacement values, photograph valuable items and check the excess and the claims deadline after delivery.
What shouldn't you put in the container?
- Passports, deeds, birth and marriage certificates, school records, medicines, jewellery and laptops: carry them with you.
- Alcohol and tobacco, which are excluded from relief.
- Anything flammable or pressurised: paint, gas bottles, aerosols, fuel left in mowers or generators.
- Weapons and ammunition, which need police permits and import licences.
- Food and plants, and untreated wooden crates; solid wood packing must meet the ISPM 15 standard.
- New items still in their boxes, which may be taxed.
- Appliances without a CE mark, and UK-only electrics: Cyprus uses the same three-pin plugs as the UK, but check that anything you ship meets EU standards.
Your removals timeline
- Three to four months before: get surveys and at least three quotes; decide what to sell or give away.
- Two to three months before: book the mover and sailing date, arrange insurance and start collecting proof of your residence abroad for form Απ. 2.
- One month before: book pet transport and car shipping, and pack an air or suitcase "first weeks" box.
- Packing day: check the inventory before you sign it and keep a copy.
- On arrival: sign the customs declaration in Cyprus, be at the delivery, and note any damage on the paperwork before the crew leaves.

You apply with Customs form Απ. 2. New items, alcohol and tobacco are not covered.

Yes, many movers load a car in a 40ft container with household goods. The car still goes through its own customs and Road Transport Department registration process, so read our car import guides before you ship it.
