Quick answer
Most moves from Dubai to Cyprus go by sea from Jebel Ali to Limassol: Dubai movers quote about 10–18 days at sea, or roughly three to five weeks door to door, against 2–10 days for air freight (2026). If you lived in the UAE for at least 12 months, your used belongings, and a car you owned and used for at least six months, can enter Cyprus free of the 10% duty and 19% VAT under transfer-of-residence relief (Customs form Απ. 2). Before you leave, the car needs an RTA export certificate, which you can only get while your UAE residence visa is still valid.
- Sea freight Jebel Ali to Limassol: about 10–18 days in transit, plus packing and 3–7 working days of customs clearance (Dubai mover, 2026); air freight takes about 2–10 days.
- Transfer-of-residence relief: 12 months living outside the EU, goods owned and used for six months, imported within six months before or 12 months after your move.
- A UAE car without relief pays 10% import duty plus 19% VAT, and, according to the International Association of Movers (2026), cars over five years old can only be registered in Cyprus under transfer-of-residence relief.
- In Dubai, get the RTA export certificate (check the current fee with the RTA) before you cancel your residence visa; fines must be paid and any car loan released.
- Keep proof of your UAE life (Emirates ID, Ejari tenancy, DEWA bills, employer letter, visa cancellation) for Cyprus Customs.
Shipping a household from Dubai to Cyprus usually means a container from Jebel Ali to Limassol, which takes about three to five weeks door to door in 2026. Because the UAE is outside the EU, your used belongings and your car can come in free of duty and VAT if you meet the transfer-of-residence conditions, but the car needs careful planning on both sides: an export certificate in Dubai, and a Cyprus rule that bars most cars over five years old.

How long does shipping take from Dubai to Cyprus?
When you ship household goods from Dubai to Cyprus by sea, the container leaves from Jebel Ali and arrives at Limassol, the island's main cargo port. Dubai movers' 2026 figures:
| Method | Route | Time quoted (2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea freight | Jebel Ali → Limassol | About 10–18 days in transit, plus 3–5 days of packing and loading in Dubai and 3–7 working days of clearance in Limassol | Alamein Movers |
| Sea freight | UAE → Cyprus | About 3–5 weeks | ISS Relocations |
| Air freight | Dubai International → Larnaca | About 2–5 days (Alamein) or 5–10 days (ISS) | Both firms |
Both firms say customs clearance and the delivery address can change these times. Sea routes between the Gulf and the eastern Mediterranean can also shift with schedules and regional disruption, so ask for the sailing date and routing in writing. Air freight suits a few boxes of clothes, documents and work kit; furniture and a car go by sea.
Which Dubai removal firms publish a Cyprus service?
These Dubai-based firms publish a Cyprus moving service and their websites were updated in 2025–26. We list them alphabetically; we don't rank or endorse them, so get several quotes after a home or video survey.
| Firm | Base | What the Cyprus page states |
|---|---|---|
| Alamein Movers | Dubai | Jebel Ali to Limassol by sea, air freight from Dubai International |
| Baxter Shipping | Al Qusais, Dubai | Moves from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to Cyprus; no transit times published |
| ISS Relocations | Al Quoz, Dubai | Sea and air freight; states FIDI accreditation |
None of these firms publishes prices for Cyprus, so compare written quotes for the same volume and the same door-to-door service, and check what is excluded (Limassol port charges, storage, difficult access).
What do you need to do in Dubai before you ship?
Paperwork for your household goods
Dubai Customs handles export declarations; your mover normally files one for you. Its 2026 service page lists export declaration fees of about AED 15–100, depending on the declaration type, and a processing time of about two working hours. Ask your mover whether this is included in the quote.
Exporting your car with the RTA
When you export a car from Dubai, you cancel its Dubai registration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and receive an export certificate. As of October 2026, the RTA states:
- check the current fee for the certificate and export plates on the RTA website or app;
- you need your Emirates ID, and all traffic fines must be paid;
- do it before your visa is cancelled, while your residence documents are still valid;
- the export plates must be handed in within 14 days (Pitstop Arabia, May 2026);
- you or a legal representative may need to attend an RTA centre in person: check with the RTA.
If the car has a loan, the RTA requires the mortgage to be released electronically before the registration can be cancelled, so settle the loan with your bank and get the release done first.
Closing your UAE life, and keeping the evidence
Cyprus Customs will ask you to prove you lived outside the EU, so keep copies before your accounts close. Useful UAE documents include your Emirates ID, your Ejari-registered tenancy contract from the Dubai Land Department, DEWA bills and the final bill from your move-out request, and a letter from your employer confirming your job and your move. Your residence visa is cancelled through GDRFA Dubai, normally by your sponsor; GDRFA lists a fee of about AED 120 in total and a 60-day grace period afterwards (2026). Keep the cancellation paper too: it proves when your UAE residence ended.
Do you pay duty in Cyprus on belongings from the UAE?
The UAE is a "third country" for the EU, so your shipment goes through full customs clearance at Limassol. The Cyprus Customs and Excise Department grants relief from duty and VAT when you transfer your normal residence to Cyprus. In short, you must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months, have owned and used the goods for at least six months, and import them within six months before or 12 months after your move; for 12 months you cannot sell, lend or hire them out without Customs approval. You apply on form Απ. 2. Alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles and new items are not covered. Our removals guide explains these rules in full.
These rules depend on where you lived, not on your passport. EU, UK and other non-EU nationals, for example Indian, Russian, Pakistani or Filipino residents of the UAE, follow the same Customs procedure. If you are not an EU citizen, you will also need a Cyprus residence permit to settle, which is covered in our pillar guide. The International Association of Movers (June 2026) adds that you must be in Cyprus during clearance and sign the declaration in front of a Customs officer, so time your flight to the ship's arrival.
Can you bring a car from Dubai to Cyprus?
Yes, but a car from Dubai is a non-EU import, and the rules are stricter than for one from Europe.
- Duty and VAT. Without relief, a car from the UAE pays 10% import duty on its customs value (price plus shipping and insurance) and 19% VAT on the value plus duty. See importing a car to Cyprus.
- Relief. Under transfer of residence you can bring one car per person free of duty and VAT if you owned and used it in the UAE for at least six months, it is in your name and you hold a valid driving licence. The IAM guide (2026) adds that it should have covered at least 6,000 km. You cannot sell, lend or hire it out for 12 months.
- Age. According to the IAM guide (2026), a non-EU car that does not qualify for relief can only be imported if it is under five years old; an older car refused relief cannot be registered. The Cyprus government set the same five-year limit, counted from first registration, for UK cars in 2021. Our UK car guide notes that older cars under relief need the Road Transport Department's prior approval, so ask before you ship.
Will a GCC-spec car pass Cyprus type approval?
For registration, Cyprus requires a passenger car to be covered by European whole-vehicle type approval; if it isn't, it needs a single vehicle type-approval certificate issued in Cyprus. This is the rule the government set out for UK cars in 2021. A car sold new in the UAE was built for the Gulf market, so before you ship it, ask the brand's official importer in Cyprus whether it can issue an EU Certificate of Conformity for your chassis number. If it can't, check with the Road Transport Department what the single approval involves.
UAE cars are left-hand drive, while Cyprus drives on the left. We couldn't find an official Road Transport Department rule on registering left-hand-drive cars, so confirm with the department before you ship. Once the car clears Customs, the steps are the same as for any import: see registering an imported car, the roadworthiness test and car insurance for expats.

How long does shipping take from Dubai to Cyprus?
A Dubai mover quotes about 10–18 days at sea from Jebel Ali to Limassol in 2026, plus a few days of packing in Dubai and 3–7 working days of customs clearance in Cyprus. Allow roughly three to five weeks door to door; air freight takes about 2–10 days.
Do I pay customs duty in Cyprus on household goods from the UAE?
Not if you qualify for transfer-of-residence relief: you must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months and owned and used the items for at least six months. You apply on Customs form Απ. 2 and must be in Cyprus for the clearance.
Can I take my Dubai car to Cyprus?
Yes, but you need an RTA export certificate and plates in Dubai, and in Cyprus the car pays 10% duty and 19% VAT unless you qualify for transfer-of-residence relief. Without relief, according to the International Association of Movers (2026), a car over five years old cannot be registered: confirm with the Road Transport Department.
Can I export a car from Dubai after cancelling my visa?
Do it before. Get the export certificate while your residence visa and documents are still valid, and check the current requirements with the RTA.
Can I export a car from Dubai that still has a loan on it?
The RTA requires a mortgage on the vehicle to be released electronically before its registration can be cancelled, so you need to settle the loan with your bank first.
Does my nationality change the customs rules in Cyprus?
No. Relief depends on where you lived, not your passport, so EU, UK, Indian, Russian or other nationals coming from the UAE follow the same Customs rules. Non-EU nationals do need a Cyprus residence permit to settle.
