Quick answer
Ayia Napa and Protaras get very quiet from November to March, but they do not shut down. Ayia Napa Marina, the monastery, Paralimni town, local buses and a handful of hotels and dive centres keep going all winter; last winter the Paralimni-Deryneia municipality listed ten Protaras hotels, two apartment complexes and four dive centres as staying open. For winter 2026-27, the Deryneia Christmas village (21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027) is confirmed, while hotel lists and winter bus timetables had not been published when we checked on 19 October 2026.
- Deryneia, in the Paralimni-Deryneia municipality, is one of nine official Christmas villages for 2026-27, running from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.
- In October 2025 the municipality listed Constantinos The Great, Vrissiana, Cavo Zoe, Protaras Plaza and AT Herbal among the hotels open through winter, plus four dive centres.
- Ayia Napa Marina's cafés and restaurants, including Deli By The Sea and Coffee Berry, list opening hours every day of the week.
- OSEA's current Famagusta timetables run until 31 October 2026; the 101/102 line links Ayia Napa, Cape Greco, Protaras and Paralimni.
- The open sea around Cyprus averages about 16–17°C from January to March, according to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.
Ayia Napa and Protaras do not close in winter, they just slow right down. From November to March most clubs, beach bars and seasonal hotels shut, but Ayia Napa Marina, the monastery, Paralimni town, the local buses and a core of hotels and dive centres keep going, and the coast is at its calmest and clearest.
Last checked: 19 October 2026. Some things for winter 2026-27 are already confirmed, such as the Deryneia Christmas village. Others, including the municipality's list of open hotels and OSEA's winter bus timetable, had not been published yet. Where we use last winter's information we say so, so you know what to expect and what to check.
If you want the sights themselves (the monastery, the Thalassa museum, the Makronissos tombs and more), read our 10 things to do in Ayia Napa and Protaras beyond the beach. This guide is about how the area works off-season.
What is Ayia Napa like in winter?
Expect a resort that is half asleep. The nightlife strip and many of the big beach hotels on Nissi Avenue close from late autumn to spring, and some whole apartment complexes stand empty. New resorts follow the same pattern: the five-star Ayã Resort, which opened in July 2025, said it would stay open until the end of October before closing for the winter.
What stays open is the part of town where people live: supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies, banks and year-round cafés around the centre and the harbour. Ayia Napa Marina, on the western edge of town, was built as a year-round destination with homes, shops and restaurants. Protaras is quieter still, but Paralimni, ten minutes inland, works the same all year with its shops, cafés, the district hospital and schools (see our Paralimni area guide).
The season also runs later than many people think. In October 2025 the Famagusta hoteliers' association said more hotels than the year before would stay open until mid-November and some until the end of November, because occupancy was strong.
Which hotels stay open in winter in Protaras and Ayia Napa?
At the end of October 2025, the Paralimni-Deryneia municipality published a list of accommodation in the Protaras area that would stay open for the winter or most of it, prepared with the Famagusta hoteliers' association and the association of recreation centre owners. It is the most reliable list we found. The 2026-27 list had not been published on 19 October 2026; the municipality said it would update the list as more businesses joined.
| Type | Listed as open in winter 2025-26 |
|---|---|
| Hotels open through the winter | Constantinos The Great, Vrissiana, Cavo Zoe, Protaras Plaza, AT Herbal |
| Other hotels on the list | Sunrise Beach Hotel, Odessa Hotel, Anastasia Hotel, Tsokkos Hotel, Cavo Maris Hotel |
| Apartment hotels | Proteas Mare Suites, Green Bay Suites |
| Supermarket | The Best Buy |
| Dive centres | Rech2Tech Scuba, Dive Cypria, Scuba Dive Cyprus, Great Turtle Diving Cyprus |
We found no similar official list for Ayia Napa itself. If you are booking for family or friends, ask the hotel directly whether it is open on your dates and which restaurants and pools will be running. Even at hotels that open all year, outdoor restaurants and pools often work only in the warmer months.
Where can you eat and drink in winter?
The easiest place to find somewhere open on a winter evening is Ayia Napa Marina. Its commercial village publishes opening hours for each venue on the marina website. When we checked in October 2026, they included:
| Venue | Type | Hours listed (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Deli By The Sea | All-day café and patisserie | Daily 09:00–00:00 |
| Coffee Berry | Café | Mon–Fri 07:30–21:00, Sat–Sun 07:30–22:00 |
| Margherita Pizza Artigianale | Italian | Tue–Thu 17:00–22:00, Fri–Sat 12:30–23:00, Sun 12:30–22:00 |
| Munch Diner | Diner | Afternoons and evenings, Mon–Sat |
| Boba Island | Tea and coffee | Wed–Sun |
| Yacht Club restaurant | Restaurant, open to the public | Not listed |
Hours can change in the low season, so check the page before you go. The waterfront promenade also makes a good winter walk.
Outside the marina, your best bet is to head where residents eat: Paralimni town centre, where shops, cafés and tavernas serve locals all year. In the resorts, look for places that advertise winter opening and follow local businesses on social media, as many post when they close and reopen.
Do buses run in Ayia Napa and Protaras in winter?
Yes. Buses in the free Famagusta district are run by OSEA, and they keep running in winter, though usually with fewer departures than in summer.
- Local routes: the 101 and 102 make a loop between Ayia Napa (Waterpark), Cape Greco, Konnos, Protaras, Pernera and Paralimni, one in each direction. The 201 and 202 circle Ayia Napa via the marina, and the 301 circles Paralimni.
- Village routes: lines such as the 501/502, 703, 706 and 710 link Deryneia, Sotira, Liopetri, Frenaros and Paralimni with Ayia Napa and Protaras.
- To Larnaca: routes 711, 712 and 714 run from Paralimni to Larnaca's Metropolis Mall or New Hospital. Cyprus by Bus says you can change there to Larnaca's town buses for the airport.
- To Nicosia: Intercity runs Nicosia (Solomos Square) to Ayia Napa and Paralimni, about two hours, with weekday and weekend timetables. As of 2026 a single is €6 and a return €11.
OSEA's current timetables are valid from 25 May to 31 October 2026. The winter timetables from 1 November had not been published when we checked, so look at osea.com.cy or call the freephone line 8000 5200 before you rely on a bus. In June 2026 the transport ministry added extra summer services on the Nicosia–Ayia Napa route; expect those extra trips to drop away in winter.
What is open at Ayia Napa Marina in winter?
The marina operates all year: berths, the commercial village, the promenade and the yacht club restaurant. For winter visitors it is usually the liveliest spot in town.
It is also where Ayia Napa's festive events have happened. In 2025 the marina ran its own Christmas village from 29 November to 28 December, open 11:00–20:00 at weekends, on Christmas Eve and on 26 December, with a food and drink market, film screenings, theatre and magic shows, workshops for children and adults, and Santa with his elves. It opened with a lighting ceremony and fireworks. The marina had not announced its 2026 plans by 19 October 2026.
Is there a Christmas village near Ayia Napa or Protaras in 2026?
Yes. Deryneia, part of the Paralimni-Deryneia municipality and about ten minutes from Protaras, is one of the nine Christmas villages chosen by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism for 2026-27. All nine run from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Ayia Napa and Paralimni are not on the official list.
The detailed 2026-27 programme was not out when we checked. As an example, in 2023-24 Deryneia's village was set up around Panagia Square and the museum area, stretching to Agios Modestos Square, and opened on Fridays, weekends and holidays, then every day between Christmas and early January. Watch the municipality's website from November for times. For the island-wide picture, see our guide to things to do in Cyprus in December.
What happens at Epiphany in Ayia Napa?
On Wednesday 6 January 2027, a public holiday, Ayia Napa celebrates Epiphany at the harbour. In recent years the procession has gone from the Church of Panagia down to the harbour, where the cross is thrown into the sea and swimmers dive for it. In 2025, when Ayia Napa hosted the official state celebration, more than 35 people dived, aged from 8 to 65; in 2026 there were more than 30. The 2027 programme was not announced when we checked. Read our full Epiphany guide for times and tips.
Can you swim in the sea in winter?
Many residents swim all winter. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism gives open-sea averages of about 16–17°C from January to March, and shallow water near the shore can be a degree or two cooler in February. Days on the coast usually reach the high teens, but north winds can make a calm-looking morning feel cold.
There are no lifeguards in winter, so swim with others, stay close to shore and stay out when the sea is rough. Our winter sea swimming guide covers temperatures month by month, clubs and kit.
Is winter a good time to dive at MUSAN?
Diving continues in winter, and four Protaras dive centres were on the municipality's winter 2025-26 list: Rech2Tech Scuba, Dive Cypria, Scuba Dive Cyprus and Great Turtle Diving Cyprus. MUSAN, the Museum of Underwater Sculpture off Pernera beach in Ayia Napa, is visited through partner dive schools, so ask a dive centre whether it is running MUSAN trips on your dates. Bring or hire a thicker wetsuit than in summer, and expect trips to depend on sea conditions. The Famagusta Tourism Board's diving spots page lists other sites along the coast.
Can you walk at Cape Greco in winter?
Winter is one of the best times. The paths are empty, the light is clear and there is no summer heat on the bare limestone. Bus 101/102 stops at Cape Greco if you do not drive. A few winter points:
- Check the wind. Spray and waves reach the low cliffs and sea caves on stormy days; stay well back from the edge.
- Visitor centre hours are shorter. Visit Cyprus lists the Environmental Information and Education Centre near the main car park as open on weekday mornings in winter, with a small fee.
- Sunset comes early, at around 16:40 in December, so start walks by early afternoon.
Our Cape Greco guide has the trails, the sea caves and parking.
Where can you go birdwatching near Protaras?
Paralimni Lake, on the western edge of Paralimni, is a seasonal wetland that fills in wet winters. It is a protected Natura 2000 site, and more than 180 bird species have been recorded there. It is one of the wetlands that flamingos use in Cyprus, though the biggest flocks are at the Larnaca and Akrotiri salt lakes. There is no easy public access to the shore and much of the land is private, so watch from the surrounding roads and tracks and do not drive onto the lakebed. Cape Greco is the other good spot, especially for migrating birds.
Practical tips for winter in Ayia Napa and Protaras
- Book direct and ask what is open. Confirm the hotel is running on your dates, and which restaurant, pool and spa will be open.
- Pack layers. Sunny days can feel like spring, but evenings are cool and many holiday apartments have only air-conditioning for heat.
- Shop in Paralimni. For bigger supermarkets, a pharmacy on duty or the hospital, Paralimni is the year-round centre.
- Check bus times each month. Winter timetables thin out, especially in the evening.
- Monastery hours are shorter. Ayia Napa Monastery opens daily 09:30–14:30 from November to April and is closed on public holidays.
What to do next
- Check the OSEA timetables in early November for the 2026-27 winter times.
- Ask your hotel or rental host directly whether it stays open on your dates, and what facilities will run.
- Put 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 in your diary for the Deryneia Christmas village, and watch the marina for its own festive plans.
- Plan a Cape Greco walk and a winter swim on a calm, sunny day, and see the sights in our beyond-the-beach guide.
