Quick answer

Pilates is a low-impact method of exercise that builds core strength, posture and control, done either on a mat or on a spring-loaded machine called a Reformer. In Cyprus, group Mat classes start at about €10 and Reformer sessions typically cost €20 to €30, with private sessions up to around €60 (as of autumn 2026). Every district has studios: in Paphos, Rewell Emotion Fitness in Peyia offers Pilates Mat and Pilates Fusion Flow classes and private Reformer sessions, with €10 single classes and €55 a month for unlimited group classes.

  • Mat Pilates uses your body weight and small props; Reformer Pilates adds a sliding carriage, springs and straps for resistance or support.
  • As of autumn 2026, group Mat classes cost from about €10, group Reformer classes about €20 to €30 and private sessions €20 to €60, depending on the studio.
  • Rewell Emotion Fitness in Peyia, Paphos, offers Pilates Mat and Pilates Fusion Flow classes and private Reformer sessions: €10 a class or €55 a month for unlimited group classes (October 2026).
  • Pilates suits beginners, many over-50s and people returning to exercise, but if you have back pain, an injury or a health condition, ask your doctor or physiotherapist first.
  • When choosing a studio, check class size, instructor training, beginner sessions and how credits or packs expire.

Pilates has become one of the most popular ways to keep fit in Cyprus, from small Reformer studios in Limassol and Nicosia to Mat classes in village gyms around Paphos. It is low impact, suits most ages and levels, and is easy to fit around work. This guide explains the two main types, who they suit, what you can expect to pay and where to start in each district.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It focuses on controlled movements, breathing and the deep muscles that support your spine, often called the core. A typical class works through a series of exercises for strength, flexibility, balance and posture, with an emphasis on doing each movement well rather than doing many repetitions.

Classes usually last 45 to 60 minutes. You leave feeling worked rather than exhausted, which is one reason many people use Pilates alongside walking, swimming or the gym.

Reformer or Mat: what is the difference?

Mat Pilates is done on a thick exercise mat using your own body weight, sometimes with small props such as balls, rings, bands or light weights. Classes can be larger, need no special equipment and are usually the cheaper option. Mat work can be surprisingly hard, because there is nothing to support you.

Reformer Pilates uses a machine with a sliding carriage, adjustable springs, a footbar and straps. The springs can add resistance to make an exercise harder or give support to make it easier, so the same class can work for a beginner and an experienced client. Because each person needs a machine, groups are small (often five to twelve people) and classes cost more. Some studios also use other equipment, such as the Tower or the Cadillac.

Which should you choose? If you are new, either is fine as long as the class is for beginners. Many people start with Mat classes for the price and add Reformer sessions later, or begin with a few private Reformer sessions to learn the basics before joining a group.

Who does Pilates suit?

Pilates is adaptable, which makes it popular with people who do not enjoy high-intensity classes:

  • Beginners and people returning to exercise: the pace is slow and instructors can offer easier versions of each exercise.
  • Over-50s: Pilates is low impact and works on balance, mobility and strength. Some studios run classes designed for older adults.
  • People with back pain: many find Pilates helpful for posture and core strength, but back pain has many causes and some exercises may not suit you.
  • After an injury or surgery, or during and after pregnancy: some studios offer clinical, rehabilitation or pre- and postnatal Pilates, sometimes led by physiotherapists.

If you have back pain, an injury, a health condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor or physiotherapist whether Pilates is suitable before you start, and tell the instructor at your first class. If you need exercise for a medical reason, your GESY personal doctor can refer you to a physiotherapist; our guide to GESY explains how referrals work. GESY does not pay for fitness classes.

How much does Pilates cost in Cyprus?

Prices vary with the type of class, group size and how many sessions you buy at once. As of autumn 2026, published prices look like this:

Option Typical price Example
Group Mat class from €10 Rewell Emotion Fitness, Peyia: €10 a class, €55 a month for unlimited group classes
Group Reformer class about €20–€30 Altius Pilates, Nicosia: €20 a session, €65 for 4 sessions in a month

Private session €20–€60 Rewell Emotion Fitness: €20 for a private Reformer session; Marlēn Pilates: €60

Most Reformer studios sell packs or credits that expire after a set time, often four to six weeks, and some sell monthly memberships. Check how long a pack is valid, whether unused sessions roll over and how much notice you need to give to cancel a booking without losing the credit.

How to choose a Pilates studio

  1. Location and timetable. A studio ten minutes from home is one you will keep going to. Check that classes run at times that suit you, including early mornings or evenings.
  2. Class size. Smaller groups mean more attention from the instructor, which matters most when you are new.
  3. Instructor training. Ask what Pilates training the instructors have, and whether anyone has a physiotherapy background if you have an injury.
  4. Beginner options. Look for beginner classes, an intro offer or private sessions so you learn the basics safely.
  5. Language. Ask which language classes are taught in, especially if your Greek is limited.
  6. Terms. Read the rules on pack expiry, cancellations, late arrival and refunds before you pay.

Try one or two classes before you commit to a long package, and ask whether you can watch a class first.

Tips for getting started

  • Wear close-fitting clothes so the instructor can see your alignment. Many Reformer studios ask for grip socks; check whether they sell them.
  • Arrive early for your first class to fill in a health form and learn how the equipment works.
  • Go at your own pace. It is normal to find some exercises hard at first. Tell the instructor if anything hurts.
  • Train around the heat. In summer, morning and evening classes are more comfortable, and drink plenty of water.
  • Combine it with the outdoors. Pilates works well alongside walking, swimming and cycling; our guide to outdoor sports in Cyprus has ideas.
  • Meet people. Small classes are a good way to make friends when you are new; see our tips on building a social network in Cyprus.

What to do next

  1. If you have a health condition, injury or back pain, speak to your doctor or physiotherapist first.
  2. Shortlist two studios near home or work and compare timetables, class sizes and prices.
  3. Book a single, intro or beginner class before buying a pack.
  4. Check how long packs last and the cancellation rules before you pay.
  5. In north-west Paphos, try a Pilates Mat or Fusion Flow class at Rewell Emotion Fitness in Peyia, or book a private Reformer session.
