Quick answer
The Cypriot gifts that travel best at Christmas are shelf-stable ones: Geroskipou loukoumi, Commandaria and other local wines, zivania, olive oil, honey, rose products from Agros and Lefkara lace or silver. Buy them at the producers or at the nine Christmas Villages, which run from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Leave halloumi, lountza and sausages behind if you are going to Great Britain: meat and dairy from the EU have been banned from personal luggage since 12 April 2025, and gifts posted to the UK worth over £39 can be charged VAT on delivery.
- Shelf-stable gifts (loukoumi, wine, zivania, olive oil, honey, rose water, lace, silver) travel and post far better than cheese or cured meat.
- The nine official Christmas Villages run from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, with stalls selling local products and crafts.
- Since 12 April 2025, travellers may not bring meat or dairy products, including halloumi, from the EU into Great Britain, even if packaged or bought duty free.
- A gift posted to the UK is free of import VAT up to £39; alcohol and tobacco pay excise duty whatever their value.
- Arriving in Great Britain you can bring 18 litres of wine and 4 litres of spirits duty free, or 9 litres of drinks up to 22% ABV such as fortified wine.
- Liquids in hand luggage must fit in one 1-litre transparent bag at Larnaca and Paphos, so pack bottles in your hold luggage.
The best Christmas gifts from Cyprus are the ones that survive a suitcase or a parcel: Geroskipou loukoumi, a bottle of Commandaria or zivania, local olive oil and honey, Agros rose water, or a piece of Lefkara lace or silver. Buy them from the producers or at the Christmas Villages (21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027), and leave the halloumi and lountza out if they are going to Great Britain.

Our guide to the 10 best local products and souvenirs explains each product in detail. Here we look at them through a Christmas lens: what keeps, what is allowed in, and what is worth the luggage space.

|---|---|---|---|
| Geroskipou loukoumi and koufeta | Yes, boxed | Yes (confectionery) | Colleagues, neighbours, office desks |
| Commandaria, local wine | Yes, in the hold | Yes, within allowances | Hosts, wine lovers |
| Zivania | Yes, in the hold | Yes, counts as spirits | Friends who like a strong digestif |

Anything without meat or dairy in it is the safest choice. Sweets such as loukoumi and pastelli are confectionery, which GOV.UK lists among the products you can still bring in.
Where can you buy them from the producers?

Winery hours come from the Limassol Tourism Board, which advises checking ahead; small wineries may close over Christmas itself, so phone before you drive up. Our wine routes guide and Commandaria guide help you plan a route. For crafts from all over the island under one roof, the Cyprus Handicraft Centre in Nicosia is covered in our souvenirs guide.
Where can you shop for gifts in December?
The Christmas Villages. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism has picked nine villages for 2026-27: Agros, Deryneia, Fikardou, Kakopetria, Kalopanagiotis, Kyperounta, Lefkara, Lofou and Statos-Agios Fotios. They run from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, with wooden stalls selling local products and crafts, plus craft, wine and food workshops. Two pair neatly with the shops above: Agros for rose products and Lefkara for lace and silver, and Elaiones Stagona is in Statos-Agios Fotios. Opening days and hours for 2026-27 had not been published when we checked on 19 October 2026; they will appear on the official Christmas Villages page. Village-by-village details are in our Christmas markets guide.
Town markets. The city Christmas markets and municipal markets are good for last-minute local food and crafts; see our markets guide and the Christmas in Cyprus guide for what each town usually runs.
Practical tips for expats:
- Mountain villages are busiest on weekend afternoons, and parking fills early. Go on a weekday, or arrive early.
- Carry cash for small stalls and village shops.
- Bring a cool bag if you are buying food you will eat in Cyprus, and bubble wrap or a sturdy box for bottles.
- Many shops close on 25 and 26 December and 1 January, and 6 January (Epiphany) is also a public holiday, so do your buying before Christmas Eve, which falls on a Thursday in 2026.
Can you take halloumi and other food to the UK?
Not into Great Britain. Since 12 April 2025, travellers arriving from any EU country, Cyprus included, may not bring in meat from cattle, sheep, goats or pigs, or dairy products, for personal use. That covers cheese, milk, butter and yoghurt, and products made from those meats such as sausages, so halloumi, anari, lountza, hiromeri and Paphos sausage are all out. The ban applies even to packaged products and to items bought in airport duty free. Banned items are surrendered or seized at the border, and serious cases can lead to fines of up to £5,000 in England. The rule covers arrivals in Great Britain, not Northern Ireland.
What you can bring:
- Fish, and poultry products such as chicken or duck, for personal use.
- Eggs and honey.
- Certain composite products such as chocolate, confectionery, bread, cakes, biscuits and pasta.
- Up to 2 kg per person of infant milk, infant food or special medical food, in branded, unopened packaging that does not need to be refrigerated.
The context matters this year: foot and mouth disease was confirmed in cattle and sheep in the Larnaca district in February 2026, and the UK restricted commercial imports of untreated meat and dairy from Cyprus. Halloumi can still be exported to the UK commercially if it is heat-treated and travels with a health certificate, so it can still reach UK shops through official channels; it just cannot travel in your suitcase. Rules for other countries differ, so check with the destination country if you are flying elsewhere.
How do you send Christmas gifts from Cyprus to the UK?
Posting within the EU is simple: there are no customs charges between EU countries. The UK is different, and the person receiving your parcel may pay charges on delivery. Under HMRC's rules for gifts:
| What you send | What the recipient pays |
|---|---|
| A gift worth £39 or less (not alcohol or tobacco) | Nothing |
| A gift worth more than £39 | Import VAT, collected by Royal Mail, Parcelforce or the courier, plus their fee |
| A gift worth more than £135 | VAT and possibly customs duty, depending on the goods |
| Alcohol or tobacco | Excise duty at any value |
| Perfume over 50 g or toilet water over 0.25 litres | Import VAT |
To count as a gift, it must be sent from one private person to another, not paid for by anyone in the UK, and described as a gift on the customs declaration. Several gifts for different people in one box each get their own allowance, as long as they are wrapped separately and listed individually with their values. Gift relief for alcohol is capped at 1 litre of spirits, 1 litre of fortified or sparkling wine and 2 litres of still wine, and excise duty is due on any amount, so a bottle of Commandaria is usually better carried in your luggage than posted. If the recipient does not pay, the parcel is normally held for about three weeks and then sent back. Our parcels and customs guide covers the paperwork and EU rules in more detail.
When is the last posting date for Christmas 2026?
Cyprus Post had not announced its 2026 Christmas posting dates when we checked on 19 October 2026. It publishes a "Christmas mail" notice on its website, so look for it in November. Parcels to the UK go through customs on arrival, which adds time, so aim to post them by early December. Post offices get busy in the last fortnight before Christmas, so avoid lunchtime queues.
What about alcohol and liquids in your luggage?
Hand luggage. At Larnaca and Paphos, all liquids must fit in one transparent, resealable bag of no more than 1 litre (about 20 cm x 20 cm) per passenger, and Hermes Airports provides bags at security. Most UK airports also limit containers to 100 ml, although some allow containers of up to 2 litres; on your return flight, the rules of the airport you depart from apply. Olive oil, honey, spoon sweets, rose water and bottles of wine or zivania therefore belong in your checked bag, wrapped in clothes or a wine sleeve. Drinks bought in duty free after security can stay in hand luggage if they stay in the sealed bag with the receipt showing until you reach your final destination.
Allowances arriving in Great Britain from Cyprus:
| Drink | Duty-free allowance |
|---|---|
| Beer and cider | 42 litres |
| Wine (still or sparkling) | 18 litres |
| Spirits over 22% ABV, such as zivania | 4 litres |
| Drinks up to 22% ABV, other than beer, cider and wine (fortified wine, for example) | 9 litres |
You can split the last two allowances, for example 2 litres of spirits and 4.5 litres of fortified wine. Check the strength on the label of a Commandaria bottle to see which category it falls into. If you go over the wine allowance, duty is charged on all of it, not just the extra. Other goods, such as lace or silver, are covered by a £390 allowance. Travellers under 17 have no alcohol allowance. Over the limits, declare the goods and pay the tax due.
Remember the airline's checked bag weight limit too: a few bottles and a jar or two of honey add up quickly. Our guide to cheap Christmas flights from Cyprus covers baggage fees.
What to do next
- Make a gift list and choose shelf-stable products for anyone in Great Britain.
- Plan a December trip to a producer or a Christmas Village, and check the opening hours first.
- Post UK parcels early, declare them as gifts, and keep each gift under £39 where you can.
- Pack bottles and jars in your hold luggage and stay within the UK allowances.

Can I take halloumi from Cyprus to the UK?
Not into Great Britain in your luggage. Since 12 April 2025, dairy products and meat from cattle, sheep, goats and pigs cannot be brought in from EU countries for personal use, and GOV.UK names halloumi specifically. Items are seized at the border, and fines of up to £5,000 can apply in England.
What can I bring back from Cyprus to the UK as a Christmas present?
Sweets such as loukoumi and pastelli, chocolate, cakes and biscuits, honey, olive oil, wine and spirits within your allowances, and crafts such as lace, pottery and silver. Fish, poultry products, eggs and honey are allowed for personal use.
Do I pay tax on a Christmas gift posted from Cyprus to the UK?
Not if it is a genuine gift between private people worth £39 or less, unless it contains alcohol or tobacco, which pay excise duty at any value. Above £39 the recipient pays import VAT, and above £135 customs duty may apply too.
How much wine can I bring from Cyprus to the UK?
Up to 18 litres of still or sparkling wine, 42 litres of beer or cider, and either 4 litres of spirits over 22% ABV or 9 litres of drinks up to 22% ABV such as fortified wine (this last allowance can be split). Over the wine limit, duty is charged on all of it.
Can I take Commandaria or zivania in hand luggage?
Only in containers small enough for the security rules: at Larnaca and Paphos all liquids must fit in one transparent, resealable bag of no more than 1 litre. Full-size bottles go in your checked bag, or buy them after security in duty free.
What is the last posting date for Christmas from Cyprus in 2026?
Cyprus Post had not published its 2026 Christmas posting dates when we checked on 19 October 2026. It usually issues a Christmas mail notice on its website, so check it in November and post parcels to the UK and further afield as early as you can.
