Quick answer

Kakopetria and Galata are neighbouring villages in the Solea valley, about 55 to 60 km south-west of Nicosia, and they make an easy two-day winter break: a protected old quarter and an 18th-century watermill in Kakopetria, four painted churches in Galata, and the UNESCO-listed churches of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis and Panagia Asinou close by. In winter (16 September to 15 April) the three UNESCO churches open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–16:30 and Sunday 11:00–16:30, entry is free, and the two smaller Galata churches open by appointment. Check police road updates before driving up after snow.

  • Kakopetria sits at 667 m and Galata at 620 m in the Solea valley; Kakopetria is about 55 km and Galata about 60 km from Nicosia.
  • Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, Panagia Podithou and Panagia Asinou are UNESCO-listed, free to enter, and open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–16:30 and Sunday 11:00–16:30 from 16 September to 15 April.
  • Agios Sozomenos (1513) and Archangelos Michael (Panagia Theotokos) in Galata open by appointment on +357 99 671 776.
  • Linos Inn (restored village houses) and The Mill Hotel with its Mylos restaurant, known for local trout, are both in Kakopetria.
  • After snow, police often limit the roads up to Troodos to four-wheel drives or cars with chains; in January 2026 the Kakopetria–Karvounas road was also hit by rockfalls.

Kakopetria and Galata are two neighbouring villages in the Solea valley on the northern side of the Troodos, and together they make one of the easiest winter weekends you can take from Nicosia. You get a protected old quarter, an 18th-century watermill, five painted churches within a short drive (three of them UNESCO-listed) and riverside tavernas serving trout, all without needing to drive up to the snow.

How do you get to Kakopetria and Galata from Nicosia or Limassol?

From Nicosia, take the main Nicosia–Troodos road west and then south into the Solea valley. Kakopetria is about 55 km from the capital, and Galata, which you reach first, is listed at about 60 km. Visit Cyprus describes this road as a gentle, well-signposted climb with petrol stations on the way, which makes it the best winter approach: it stays low for most of the drive.

From Limassol, the usual route is the B8 up past Platres to Troodos Square, then down the other side via Karvounas to Kakopetria. That route crosses the highest part of the range, so after snow it is the one most likely to be restricted (see the winter section below). On a snowy weekend, it can be simpler to drive round via Nicosia, or to wait until the police lift the restrictions.

Village Altitude From Nicosia Good for
Galata 620 m about 60 km Four painted churches, folk art museum, short riverside trail
Kakopetria 667 m about 55 km Old quarter, watermill, hotels and tavernas, Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis
Nikitari (for Asinou) lower valley on the way back towards Nicosia Panagia Asinou, about 3 km from the village

What is there to see in Kakopetria's old quarter?

The old part of Kakopetria has been restored and declared a protected cultural heritage site. It is a small tangle of narrow stone-paved lanes, houses with wooden balconies and, here and there, mud-brick walls, above the point where two mountain streams meet. Walking it slowly takes an hour, more if you stop for coffee.

Look out for:

  • Mylos tis Gonias (the Corner Mill): a watermill that ground barley and other grain from 1754 until it shut after the Second World War. It was restored in 1980, and its water channel, wheel room and wheel survive.
  • Church of the Transfiguration (Metamorfosis tou Sotiros): in the middle of the old village.
  • Linos Museum and the Olive Mill Museum: small village museums on wine, bread and olive oil. We could not confirm winter opening times, so ask at your hotel.

Apples are the village's best-known crop, along with stone fruit and potatoes from the terraces around it.

Is Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis open in winter?

Yes. Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis (St Nicholas of the Roof) is about 5 km from Kakopetria on the road towards Pedoulas. It is an 11th-century domed church that got a steep timber roof later to protect it from the weather, which gives it its name. Inside, the walls are covered with paintings from the 11th to the 17th century, the most important surviving sequence of that period on the island. It is the only monastery church of its kind left in Cyprus, and it is wheelchair accessible with an audio guide.

Winter hours (16 September to 15 April), as listed by Visit Cyprus and checked 19 October 2026: Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–16:30, Sunday 11:00–16:30, free entry. It closes on public holidays, and no Monday hours are listed. That matters over Christmas: 25 and 26 December, 1 January and 6 January are all public holidays. For background on all ten UNESCO churches, see our guide to the Troodos painted churches.

Which painted churches can you visit in Galata?

Galata has four painted churches, and it is worth a full morning.

Church Date Visiting Link
Panagia Podithou (UNESCO) built 1502 Tue–Sat 10:00–16:30, Sun 11:00–16:30 in winter; free Visit Cyprus
Agios Sozomenos built and painted 1513 By appointment, +357 99 671 776; free Visit Cyprus
Archangelos Michael (Panagia Theotokos) paintings early 16th century By appointment, +357 99 671 776; free Visit Cyprus
Panagia Asinou (UNESCO), near Nikitari built 1099 Tue–Sat 10:00–16:30, Sun 11:00–16:30 in winter; free Visit Cyprus

Panagia Podithou was paid for by Demetre de Coron and his wife Helen, and its paintings are in the Italo-Byzantine style that reached Cyprus at the end of the 15th century: softer and more Western than the Byzantine work at Stegis. It has a ramp and accessible toilets.

Agios Sozomenos, in the centre of the village, was painted thanks to 14 villagers who shared the cost, according to the inscription over the west door. Do not miss the outside north wall, with the Last Judgement, the Tree of Jesse and the eight Ecumenical Councils.

Archangelos Michael, also known as Panagia Theotokos, is a small timber-roofed chapel about 200 m from Panagia Podithou.

How the key-holder system works

The two smaller Galata churches have no fixed hours: a caretaker opens them for you. Visit Cyprus lists the same number (+357 99 671 776) for both and for Podithou, so call a day ahead, say roughly when you will arrive, and keep your phone on. In practice this means you can see all three Galata churches in one visit if you plan it.

Finish the village with the Museum of Folkloric Art, set up in 1990 in a building styled like a traditional house, with more than 500 objects donated by villagers, grouped by trade (shepherd, potter, shoemaker and so on). The Galata community site does not give current hours, so ask in the village.

Panagia Asinou on the way home

Panagia Asinou (Panagia Forviotissa) stands alone by a stream about 3 km from Nikitari, lower down the valley towards Nicosia. It was built in 1099 and has some of the finest Byzantine wall paintings in Cyprus, from the 12th to the 17th century. Its winter hours match Stegis, but it closes only on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, so it can be a good option over the holidays. It also makes a natural last stop on a Sunday afternoon drive back.

Is there a short winter walk near Kakopetria and Galata?

Two options from the official trail lists, very different in effort:

  • Archangelos – Mylos tis Rodous, Galata. The Department of Forests lists this as a 1 km, 15–20 minute easy trail (grade 1) from Archangelos church along the riverside to the old Rodous mill. It is an easy add-on to the church visits.
  • Kannoures – Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis. A 9 km downhill trail (about three hours, grade 3, "quite difficult"), starting at 1,654 m on the Karvounas–Troodos road 1 km before Troodos and ending at the church at 872 m. You can add 3 km by road into Kakopetria. Because it starts near the summit, it is only for a dry, clear day after the snow has gone; you also need a second car or a lift back up. Our Troodos waterfalls guide has more walks in the area.

Where should you stay and eat in Kakopetria?

Two places in the village are listed by the Cyprus Agrotourism Company, with bookings open for 2026:

Place What it is Link
Linos Inn Rooms, studios and suites in a group of restored old houses in the old quarter; Linos restaurant (Cypriot and international) and a café Cyprus Agrotourism
The Mill Hotel Small hotel by the old watermill, opened in 1999, with fireplace and sauna; its Mylos restaurant is known for local rainbow trout Cyprus Agrotourism

Trout is the dish to order here, and in December 2025 the Mylos restaurant was still among the best festive options, alongside several family-run riverside tavernas serving meze, grills and oven dishes. Some tavernas close one weekday, so call before you go. For other countryside stays, see our agrotourism in Cyprus guide.

What should you know about driving in the Troodos in winter?

The villages themselves sit at 620–670 m, but the roads above them climb to over 1,600 m and are the ones that close. Recent examples:

  • On 13–14 January 2026, police allowed only four-wheel drives or cars with snow chains on Platres–Troodos, Karvounas–Troodos and Prodromos–Troodos, and the Kakopetria–Karvounas road was hit by rockfalls and landslides. Kakopetria–Pinewood–Pedoulas stayed open but slippery.
  • On 28 January 2026, the same chains-or-4x4 rule applied again on Karvounas–Troodos, Platres–Troodos and Prodromos–Troodos.

Practical tips:

  1. Check the latest police road announcements (carried by Cyprus Mail, Politis and the CNA) on the morning you set off.
  2. If you want snow, plan Troodos Square and the Troodos ski area as a day trip from Kakopetria rather than driving over the top from Limassol.
  3. Watch for fallen rocks after heavy rain, and slow down on shaded bends where frost lingers. Our guide to driving in the rainy season covers the basics.
  4. Pack warm layers: stone churches are cold inside.

What to do next

  1. Pick your dates and avoid Mondays and public holidays if Stegis and Podithou are a priority.
  2. Book a room at Linos Inn or The Mill Hotel, and ask about restaurant hours.
  3. Call +357 99 671 776 a day ahead to arrange the two smaller Galata churches.
  4. Check the police road updates the morning you leave, and add Asinou on the way home.
