Quick answer

To host visiting family in Cyprus at Christmas, book airport transfers early (Kapnos shuttles, the Limassol Airport Express or local buses run from both airports, with reduced services on Christmas Day), remember that shops close by 18:00 on Christmas Eve and most sites close on 25 December and 1 January, and plan a few surprises: a day at one of the nine Christmas Villages (21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027), a winery and Commandaria tasting, flamingos at Larnaca Salt Lake, a sunny walk at the Paphos mosaics, or snow in Troodos if it has fallen. UK visitors need no visa for up to 90 days, and Cyprus does not use the EU Entry/Exit System.

  • UK visitors can stay up to 90 days without a visa; their passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for 3 months after they leave.
  • Cyprus is not affected by the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), so guests do not register fingerprints on arrival here.
  • Shops must close by 18:00 on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve; 25 and 26 December, 1 January and 6 January are public holidays.
  • Kato Paphos Archaeological Park and the Tombs of the Kings are open daily 08:30–17:00 in winter but closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
  • December on the coast averages about 18–19°C by day; Troodos averages about 8°C, with snow possible but not guaranteed.

Having family or friends to stay for Christmas in Cyprus is easy if you sort three things early: transfers from the airport (services are reduced on Christmas Day), a plan for the days when almost everything is closed (25 December and 1 January), and two or three outings they would never find on their own. Here is how to do all three, with the surprises that work best in a Cypriot December.

Last checked: 19 October 2026. Holiday timetables and most 2026 Christmas events are announced from mid-November; we note what is confirmed and what is not.

What do your guests need to enter Cyprus?

  • UK visitors can stay up to 90 days without a visa for holidays or visiting family. Their passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day they leave, with a blank page. Border officers may ask for a return ticket and proof of funds.
  • The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) does not apply in Cyprus. It has been fully running at Schengen borders since 10 April 2026, but GOV.UK confirms Cyprus is not affected, so guests will not register fingerprints on arrival, and days in Cyprus do not count towards the Schengen 90 days.
  • ETIAS, the EU travel authorisation, is planned for 2027 with no start date announced yet, so it is not needed this Christmas.
  • If you travel on to Schengen with them: holders of Cyprus residence permits are not exempt from EES.

How do guests get from the airport to your home?

Book transfers as soon as flights are confirmed. Services thin out on public holidays: on Christmas Day 2025 Kapnos ran no Paphos airport services and paused some Larnaca–Nicosia departures, and on New Year's Eve 2025 the last airport-to-Nicosia shuttle left at 22:45. The 2026 holiday timetables are not out yet.

From Option Price (2026)
Larnaca airport Bus 425 to central Larnaca €2.70, €4.70 from 21:00 to 04:00
Larnaca airport Kapnos Airport Shuttle to Nicosia, Ayia Napa, Protaras and Paphos Nicosia about €9; Ayia Napa from about €13
Both airports Limassol Airport Express to Limassol €10 adult, €5 child
Paphos airport Bus 612 (Kato Paphos) or 613 (Karavella station, centre) €2, €3 after 21:00
Paphos airport Kapnos direct to Nicosia Children up to 12 travel free
Larnaca airport Taxi About €55–75 to Nicosia, €70–90 to Limassol, €120–160 to Paphos

Kapnos can be booked online up to 60 minutes before departure, and its scheduled Larnaca shuttles run until about 23:45. If you are collecting guests yourself, Larnaca's P2 short-stay car park costs €20 for 24 hours. More options are in our public transport guide.

Will your guests hire a car?

A UK photocard licence is valid in Cyprus; an old paper licence may need an International Driving Permit. Remind them that Cyprus drives on the left, the drink-drive limit is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood and hand-held phones are banned. GOV.UK warns that a hire company asking for a passport as a deposit is illegal, and that hire cars are often not insured in the north. Hire desks usually want a credit card in the main driver's name.

What is open and closed over Christmas?

Day What to expect
24 December Banks open; shops must close by 18:00
25 December Public holiday; shops closed; Paphos archaeological sites closed
26 December Public holiday; shops were closed in 2025
31 December Shops must close by 18:00
1 January Public holiday; shops and archaeological sites closed
6 January Epiphany public holiday

Resort shops often stay open on holidays. Restaurants and hotels serve Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year menus, and the popular ones fill up early, so reserve in November. Do the big food shop by 23 December; our Christmas shopping guide has the details.

How can you surprise your guests?

A day in a Christmas Village

From 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, nine villages run the official Christmas Villages programme: Agros, Deryneia, Fikardou, Kakopetria, Kalopanagiotis, Kyperounta, Lefkara, Lofou and Statos-Agios Fotios. Expect wooden stalls of local products and crafts, food, wine and craft workshops, guided tours and walks. In 2025 they opened every day from 22 December, which suits guests arriving for Christmas week. Our Christmas Villages guide has each one.

Wine, Commandaria and a mountain lunch

The Cyprus Wine Museum in Erimi, 13 km west of Limassol, is a gentle introduction: entry is €4, or €5 with a tasting, and it is closed on public holidays. Then drive up to a winery and a village taverna. See our guide to the best Cypriot wines and Commandaria for Christmas, which also explains how much wine guests can take home to the UK.

Mosaics in the winter sun

Christmas week is a fine time for Kato Paphos Archaeological Park (€4.50) and the Tombs of the Kings (€2.50), both open daily 08:30–17:00 in winter, except 25 December and 1 January. A Department of Antiquities pass covering several sites costs €8.50 for one day. Note that the Kourion archaeological museum in Episkopi has been closed for upgrade works since 1 August 2026; the ancient site of Kourion is separate.

Flamingos at Larnaca Salt Lake

The lake fills with water in winter, and the flamingos arrive from November (the first were spotted on 13 November in 2024). A walk along the lake shore, a few minutes from the airport, is a surprise most visitors do not expect. See our Salt Lake flamingos guide.

Snow in Troodos, if it comes

Visit Cyprus says snow on Troodos usually starts before Christmas, but it is not guaranteed: in the 2025-26 season the first ski slope opened only on 14 January 2026. Keep it as a surprise for the day the forecast turns snowy, and pack warm clothes; Troodos averages about 8°C by day in December.

A Christmas concert or a winter walk

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra held a family Christmas concert in Nicosia, Larnaca and Limassol on 10–12 December 2025; check its site for the 2026 programme. For walks, gorges can close after heavy rain (the Forestry Department closed Avakas gorge on 6 December 2025), so check before you go.

Where can extra guests stay?

If your home is full, a village house can be part of the treat. The Cyprus Agrotourism Company, set up by the tourism authorities in 1996, has more than 150 members, from traditional houses to boutique hotels; see also our agrotourism guide. For holiday lets, check that the listing shows a Deputy Ministry of Tourism registration number: in a Cyprus Mail sample in September 2026, only 6 of 20 listings had a valid one.

What should guests pack?

December on the coast averages about 18–19°C by day and 7–10°C at night, with around six hours of sunshine and some heavy showers (about 105 mm of rain across the month). Evenings and stone-floored homes feel chilly, so tell guests to bring warm layers, and read our tips on winter in Cyprus.
