Geri Area Guide: Quiet Suburb Near Athalassa Park

Quick answer

Geri (also spelled Yeri) is a quiet residential suburb about 10 km south-east of central Nicosia, now part of the Latsia–Geri municipality. Known for its family houses and proximity to Athalassa National Forest Park, it suits families and couples who want space and calm within easy reach of the capital.

  • About 10 km south-east of central Nicosia, usually around 15–20 minutes' drive away.
  • Quiet, relaxed suburb with mainly detached and semi-detached family houses.
  • Close to Athalassa National Forest Park for walking, running and cycling.
  • Good for families and couples who want space at a fair price.
  • Car-dependent, with limited buses and quiet evenings.

What is Geri like?

Geri is a calm, residential suburb on the south-eastern edge of Nicosia. It grew from a small village into a municipality in its own right and, since the 2024 local government reform, has been part of the Latsia–Geri municipality alongside its larger neighbour, Latsia.

Life here is relaxed. Streets are lined with family homes, many with gardens, and the old village centre still has a church, coffee shops and a neighbourly feel. It is far enough from the city centre to feel peaceful, yet close enough that you are never cut off from the capital.

Where is Geri and how do you get around?

Geri lies about 10 km south-east of central Nicosia, next to Latsia and close to Athalassa National Forest Park. The city centre is usually around 15–20 minutes away by car, though rush hour can add time. The motorway towards Larnaca and Limassol is a short drive away, putting Larnaca Airport roughly 35–40 minutes away and Limassol about an hour.

Public buses link Geri with Nicosia and neighbouring suburbs, but services are limited; see our guide to public transport. In practice, nearly all residents drive.

Who is Geri best for?

  • Families who want a house with a garden, local schools and quieter streets.
  • Couples looking for space and calm close to the capital.
  • Remote workers who value peace and green space.
  • Retirees who want a settled community with Nicosia's services nearby.

It is less suited to people without a car, students, or anyone looking for nightlife on their doorstep.

Homes and cost of living

Detached and semi-detached houses make up much of the housing stock, alongside low-rise apartment blocks and newer developments. Geri is generally more affordable than central Nicosia and the western suburbs, and you tend to get more space and outdoor area for your money. Everyday costs are similar to the rest of the Nicosia district, although you will spend more on fuel than someone living centrally.

Schools, healthcare and everyday amenities

Geri has public primary schools and nurseries, with more schools in neighbouring Latsia. Private and international schools are elsewhere in Nicosia, so plan for a drive; see our guide to international schools in Cyprus.

There are local supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies and cafés, and neighbouring Latsia and Strovolos add larger shops and private clinics. Nicosia General Hospital, the district's main public hospital, is a short drive away in Strovolos. Our guide to GESY explains how the national health system works.

Things to do in and around Geri

Athalassa National Forest Park is the big draw. Covering several hundred hectares between Aglantzia, Strovolos, Latsia and Geri, it is one of the most visited parks in Cyprus, with walking and cycling routes, a botanical garden and rich birdlife.

Locally, you will find traditional tavernas and coffee shops. For more choice, Latsia's shops and the city centre's restaurants, museums and theatres are a short drive away. The nearest beaches are around Larnaca, which is easy for weekend trips.
