What kinds of riding can you do?
- Arena lessons: the best start for beginners and returning riders; most stables offer 30- to 60-minute private or group lessons.
- Trail rides (hacks): guided rides through olive groves, hills and forestry tracks, usually at a walk for beginners, with trotting and cantering for experienced riders.
- Coastal and sunset rides: offered in Peyia and Cape Greco; ask about the route, as some rides stay on the cliff paths rather than the sand.
- Pony rides and pony clubs: short led rides for small children, and regular sessions where children learn to care for ponies. See our guide to farms and animal experiences for kids.
- Regular lessons and competition: some riding schools, such as Horseland Cyprus in Nicosia, give riders the chance to compete in Cyprus and abroad.
When is the best time to ride in Cyprus?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (October and November) are ideal, with green countryside in spring and mild days. Winter riding is pleasant on dry days. From June to September the heat is intense, so stables run rides early in the morning and towards sunset. Our summer in Cyprus guide explains how to deal with the heat.
Tips for riding in Cyprus
- Book ahead. Almost all stables work by appointment.
- Be honest about your weight and experience. Stables use it to match you with a suitable horse, and most have limits to protect their horses.
- Wear the right kit: long trousers, closed shoes with a small heel, and a riding hat (ask whether the stable provides one).
- Bring water, sun cream and a hat for after the ride; shade on the trails can be scarce.
- Look at the horses. A good stable has horses in good condition, with shade, water and clean tack. If you are unhappy with what you see, it is fine to leave.
- Check the insurance. Ask whether the stable has public liability cover, and check that your own health or travel insurance covers riding. Our GESY guide explains public healthcare if you have an accident.
What to do next
- Book a short lesson at the stable nearest you before signing up for a long trail ride.
- Plan a riding morning with a walk or lunch nearby: our 10 best hiking trails in Cyprus and hiking routes pages cover routes close to several stables.
