Quick answer
The best autumn colour in the Troodos is in the river valleys rather than on the pine-covered peaks: plane and alder trees along the Karkotis (Solea valley, around Kakopetria) and in the Marathasa valley (Kalopanayiotis, Pedoulas), plus orchards and vineyards around Agros, Kyperounta and Platres, usually at their best from early to late November. Good autumn walks include the 9 km Kannoures – Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis trail down to Kakopetria, the 3 km Prodromos – Zoumi trail and the 6 km Agros – Kato Mylos loop. Pedoulas holds its Zivania and Palouze Festival on Sunday 25 October 2026, the day the clocks go back.
- Colour comes from plane trees, alders, orchards and vines in the valleys; the pines and golden oak on the peaks stay green all year.
- Expect daytime highs of about 13°C and nights of about 6°C in November at Prodromos (1,380 m), with the first proper rain of the season.
- Pedoulas Zivania and Palouze Festival: Sunday 25 October 2026, 11:00–17:00, in the Folklore Museum courtyard.
- After the clocks go back on 25 October it is dark soon after 17:00, so start walks early and aim to finish by mid-afternoon.
- The Troodos Environmental Centre at Troodos Square opens on weekdays only from November to March.
The best autumn colour in the Troodos is down in the river valleys, not on the pine-covered summits: plane trees, alders, orchards and vines turn yellow, orange and red around Kakopetria, Kalopanayiotis, Pedoulas, Agros and Platres, usually from early to late November. Pair a valley walk with a village lunch, start early because the clocks go back on 25 October, and take a warm layer.

Where are the autumn colours in the Troodos?
Most of the Troodos forest is black and Calabrian pine, which stays green, and the endemic golden oak (Quercus alnifolia) is evergreen too. Its leaves are golden only on the underside. So the colour comes from the deciduous trees that grow wherever there is water or farming:
- Solea valley (Kakopetria, Galata): plane and alder trees line the Karkotis river below Kakopetria's protected old quarter, with orchards on the terraces above. The Kakopetria page on Visit Cyprus covers the old village and the Mylos tis Gonias watermill.
- Marathasa valley (Kalopanayiotis, Pedoulas): a steep valley of cherry and fruit orchards, walnut trees and riverside planes. Kalopanayiotis, named one of UN Tourism's Best Tourism Villages in 2024, has a Venetian stone bridge, sulphur springs and the UNESCO-listed monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis. Pedoulas, at about 1,100 m, sits higher up the same valley.
- Pitsilia (Agros, Kyperounta): terraced vineyards and apple orchards. Agros is built like an amphitheatre at about 1,100 m, and Kyperounta is at about 1,300 m.
- Platres and the Krasochoria: the stream valley around Platres, and the vineyards below it on the road to Limassol, which tend to turn first, often in late October. Our Platres area guide covers the village.
Timing depends on the first cold nights and on rain, so it shifts from year to year. As a rule, higher vineyards turn first, and the riverside planes peak around mid to late November.

Which nature trails suit an autumn walk?
These trails pass through or above the deciduous valleys. Lengths and grades come from the 2026 Visit Cyprus hiking map and the Department of Forests list of trails outside State Forests. Grades run from 1 (easy) to 3 (difficult).
| Trail | Area | Length | Grade / time | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kannoures – Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis | Troodos to Kakopetria | 9.5 km (12.5 km to Kakopetria) | 3 / about 4 hrs downhill | Visit Cyprus |
| Prodromos – Zoumi | Above Marathasa | About 3 km linear | 2 / 1–1.5 hrs | Visit Cyprus |
| Prodromos Dam – Stavroulia | Above Marathasa | 4.5 or 5.5 km | 3 (steep descent) / 1.5–2 hrs | Hiking map |
| Kalopanayiotis – Oikos | Marathasa | 4 km linear | Not graded | Department of Forests |
| Ariadne | Gerakies, Marathasa | 3.3 km circular | Not graded | Department of Forests |
| Agros – Kato Mylos | Agros | 6 km circular | Not graded | Department of Forests |
| Polystypos Hazelnut Forest | Polystypos, Pitsilia | 1.3 km linear | Not graded | Department of Forests |
| Psilo Dentro – Pouziaris | Platres | 9 km | 3 (very challenging) / 3–4 hrs | Hiking map |
| Livadi | Kampos tou Livadiou | 1.5 km | 1 / 30 min | Hiking map |
Kannoures – Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis is the classic autumn walk. It starts on the B9 about 1 km before Troodos Square at roughly 1,650 m and follows the young Karkotis river down to about 870 m, passing a disused chrome mine and ending at the UNESCO-listed Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, with the option of continuing to Kakopetria. It is long and downhill all the way, so arrange a lift back up or leave a second car at the bottom.
Prodromos – Zoumi is the gentle option, with views over the Marathasa valley, Kykkos and Morfou Bay. At Zoumi it meets the Prodromos Dam – Stavroulia trail, and you can loop back along the road to Prodromos (about 2.7 km extra).
The village trails in Kalopanayiotis, Gerakies and Agros are looked after by the local communities rather than the Forestry Department, so signposting can vary. Ask in the village or at a café before you set off. The Polystypos hazelnut grove is a short, colourful leg-stretch on the drive between Agros and the Madari ridge.

What is on in Troodos villages this autumn?
- Pedoulas Zivania and Palouze Festival, Sunday 25 October 2026: 11:00–17:00 in the courtyard of the Folklore Museum, with music, dancing, local products and free tastes of palouzes (grape-must pudding) and zivania. It is the same day the clocks go back, so the times are winter time. Read up on the spirit in our zivania guide.
- Kyperounta Apple Festival: this year's edition was on 10–11 October, but apples from Kyperounta and the Pitsilia villages are on sale at roadside stalls and village shops through the autumn.
- Agros products: Agros is known for rosewater, which has EU protected (PGI) status, and for cured meats such as lountza, loukaniko and hiromeri. The family-run Rose Factory on Triantafyllon Street sells rose products.
- Soutzoukos and palouzes: autumn is the season for these grape-must sweets in the wine villages around Platres and Omodos.
We could not confirm a chestnut festival date for 2026, so check our festivals month by month page and the village websites nearer the time.

What is the weather like and what should you wear?
Long-term averages at Prodromos (1,380 m) are about 19°C by day and 11°C at night in October, falling to about 13°C and 6°C in November, according to our Cyprus weather guide. It is colder at Troodos Square and on the ridges, and the first heavy rain of the season usually comes in November, often with fog.
- Layers: a fleece or light down jacket, plus a waterproof shell.
- Shoes: walking boots or trail shoes with grip. Wet leaves on rocky paths are slippery.
- Hat and gloves for early starts and anything above about 1,500 m.
- Water and snacks: most trails have no drinking water.
- Bright clothing: in recent years the small-game hunting season has opened on the first Sunday of November, with hunting on Wednesdays and Sundays. Wear something bright on those days, especially on village trails outside the National Forest Park.
How do daylight and driving change in autumn?
The clocks go back one hour at 04:00 on Sunday 25 October 2026, and sunset moves to around 17:00. See our clocks go back guide. In a steep valley it gets dark sooner, so start long walks by 09:00 and plan to be off the trail by about 16:00.
- Pick your road: the B9 from Nicosia climbs through the Solea valley via Kakopetria, and the B8 from Limassol goes up via Platres. Allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half from either city.
- Fill up before you climb: do your fuel stop in town, as distances between villages are longer than they look on the map.
- Expect slow bends: after rain, roads can be slippery with leaves, mud and fallen stones, and fog is common on the ridges.
- Check for closures: in November 2025 the Forestry Department closed stretches of mountain road on weekdays for fire-prevention works, and snow can close the roads to Troodos from December. Check the Cyprus Police announcements before setting off.
- Report fires on 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112.
Where can you eat and stay?
Every village above has tavernas and cafés, and many serve trout, village sausages and seasonal dishes. Some close on weekdays outside summer and winter weekends, so call ahead or arrive with a backup plan.
